For the "Body & Line" project, I delved into the fundamental elements and principles of art and design – line, structure, volume, form, and surface. My goal was to develop a solid understanding of visual perception and 3D design while crafting an object that intimately connects with the human body. This project was a journey of refining my process, precision, and hand skills. I chose to create a wearable sculptural form, an armature, using basket reed and bamboo skewers, and then surfaced it in a way that spoke to me personally. Throughout the project, my work was evaluated based on craftsmanship, design comprehension, and my active engagement in the process.
In response to the project's three points of reference, I envisioned and brought to life a corset garment. It was in this form that I found my creative outlet. I decided to infuse my own unique touch by stamping charms and love letters onto the garment, drawing inspiration from the concept of a treasure chest. These embellishments found a home as the sleeves of the corset, creating a visually captivating and interactive design.
My journey commenced with the creation of material studies, experimenting with forms like a sphere, cylinder, and tetrahedron. These initial explorations laid the foundation for my interpretation of an organic form – the corset garment. I was drawn to the idea of body extension, and the incorporation of stamped charms and love letters aligned perfectly with this concept, making it a deeply personal and expressive project.
As I progressed, I dedicated time to sketching and planning, meticulously refining my line-based orthographic sketches. Ensuring precise dimensions and detailing materials specifications was key to translating my vision into reality. When it came time for construction, I skillfully transformed basket reed and bamboo skewers into an armature. With the careful application of staplers and hot glue, along with meticulous measuring and troubleshooting, I gradually brought my envisioned sculptural form to life.
The surfacing phase was particularly exciting. I aimed to cover over 50% of the armature, and I achieved this by using tissue paper to stamp charms and love letters onto the surface. This process not only showcased my understanding of design concepts but also allowed me to infuse the piece with a personal touch, turning the corset garment into a meaningful work of art.
The grand reveal took place during the class critique on November 10. My unique corset garment, adorned with stamped charms and love letters, captivated my peers. It embodied both the project's constraints and my own creative vision. The piece truly came to life as I wore it, showcasing its interactive nature. Through this project, I not only honed my design skills but also discovered the power of personal expression within the realm of art and design.
